Brazilian shock at the 2012 Billabong Rio Pro

Josh Kerr: shining at Arpoador

The Brazilians were not lucky in the first day of surfing at the 2012 Billabong Rio Pro, played at the Arpoador surf sport. Gabriel Medina, Tomas Hermes, Willian Cardoso, Heitor Alves, Jadson Andre and Raoni Monteiro were relegated to Round 2.

In the clean two-to-four foot (1.5 metre) lefthanders on offer Julian Wilson was in solid form for his opening round bout this morning, posting the day’s highest single-wave score of 9.27 out of 10 en route to attaining the day’s highest heat-total, 17.14 out of 20.

"I got kind of lucky there because Freddy (Patacchia) didn’t go on that wave," Wilson said. "The set before that, Freddy went on the first wave and the one behind was better. I think he was worried about that happening again and when that second set came through, it lined up really well for me".

"I got to my feet straight away, but then saw that the section was still building and wasn’t really there yet. I took my time and squared it up because I really wanted to get strong starts to those waves, keep it clean and not try to rush it."

Large File Transfers, No Registration: Top 10 Websites For File-Sharing Needs

Sending files from one to the other is what we used to call file-sharing. Now, the latter has a whole new meaning, but in this article we’re going to refer to the former.

Large files were a pain to send or receive just a decade ago, due to e-mail storage limitations, speed limitation, and so on. But now things are different, from the roughly 700 MB CD we’ve come to have dual-layer Blu-rays – that’s 50 GB of storage on a disk that you can keep in your pocket. Point is, the need for transferring large files on the internet is no longer a need, it’s paramount, soon to become a natural course of the inter-web.

With that said, we offer you a list of 10 file-sharing websites, free of registration. Be warned, however, some of these websites may send you unwanted e-mails.

1. WeTransfer – This a web 2.0 website that offers you a 2GB size limit of free transfer. Enter the receiver’s e-mail address, then yours and add the files you want to send.

2. DropSend – Like the other before, just enter your e-mail address (can be fake) along with the e-mail of the person you want to send the file. The data limit is 2GB.

3. WooFiles – With WooFiles you can add multiple files of up to 1GB. You can use their service as a backup as well.

4. Minus – This drag-and-drop based file-sharing website will let you download unlimited files with an upload limit of 2GB.

5. LargeFilesASAP – Add files of 2GB by entering the receiver’s e-mail address. He will then receive a download link.

6. SizableSend – Yet another website that offers a 2GB limit of upload by entering your e-mail address and the receiver’s.

7. FileFactory – You can upload any file of any extension of up to 2GB for free with this website.

8. GigaSize – GigaSize, besides having a cool looking website, offer you the possibility of uploading files as big as 2GB. It can be used as a storage service too.

9. 2big2send  – Send files of up to 2GB by entering your e-mail and the recipient’s. With their business plan the file’s size limit is 5GB.

10. FileDropper – Upload a single file of maximum 5GB and share the personal link or embed it on your website/forum.

First Couple To Be Wed By The Church of Kopimism

Sweden: 2012 marked the approval of the Church of Kopimism as an official religion. Ever since, the movement attracted thousands of enthusiasts and believers from across the world; two of them decided to be united in marriage by this church.

In a world where file-sharing has become one of the most popular internet activities, it was only natural for someone to think of making it a rather serious matter. That person is Isaac Gerson – the philosophy student that started the Church of Kopimism on Sweden soil, but he probably didn’t expect to have that much success in such a short time. In the past few months, the newly found spiritual belief has spread from US to Estonia. The church’s followers believe that file-sharing is sacred and should not be restricted or constrained by any laws.

But a church is not complete without its first wedding; as such, a stage hosted the once in a lifetime event where a Romanian woman and her half an Italian man said “Yes”.

The Church of Kopimism was happy to spread the news and said:

“We are very happy today. Love is all about sharing. A married couple shares everything with each other.”

Just like any matrimony, a Kopimism marriage is following strict rules: the church allows the couple to share their love with others, as long those others don’t steal it. However, the most important rule is “to copy and remix” themselves.

“Hopefully, they will copy and remix some DNA-cells and create a new human being. That is the spirit of Kopimism. Feel the love and share that information. Copy all of its holiness.”

With that said, we wish the newlywed couple a happy and full life together.

Kelly Slater withdraws from Billabong Rio Pro due to injury

Kelly Slater: out of the Quiksilver Pro...er... Billabong Pro Rio

Kelly Slater will not be surfing the Billabong Rio Pro 2012 following a heel injury sustained in Java, Indonesia. "I injured the inside of my left heel in Java and then re-opened it again the following week at Cloudbreak," Slater said.

"It became infected and I flew to Australia to get it treated and stitched in hopes of making it to Rio, if not for Round 1, at least for Round 2. I’ve been in the water since getting it stitched and while I can go straight, I can’t do turns at all right now so I’ll have to pull out of Rio", added the Floridian.

"It’s unfortunate, but I’m just going to focus on healing up as soon as possible right now. Good luck to all the competitors in Brazil and I’ll be watching online". Slater has been replaced by Willian Cardoso.

Piracy Will Increase By 30% In The UK In The Following Year

According to a report by a leading UK law firm, roughly 30% of UK’s file-sharers say they plan to pirate more movies, music, games, and e-books during the next twelve months. As for the legal side, the study shows that 34% to 36% of those who prefer to pay for their music and movies will continue to purchase more in the year to come.

Wiggin – an established British law firm – has released its 2012 Digital Entertainment Survey. The study polled 2.500 UK citizens and revealed some interesting statistics.
The first part of the survey covers people’s entertainment activities like watching TV, listening to music or reading e-books. Surprisingly enough, the study shows that it is not until the 34th position out of 40 when an unauthorized activity appears.

In addition, 6% of respondents said they download movies or TV shows from linking and hosting websites, while 5% stated that they download video materials from regular file-sharing sites. As for the unauthorized downloading of music, only 5% of respondents said they did it, while 4% admitted to have illegally downloaded e-books.

The study shows that file-sharing is mostly popular with younger men. Of all men between 15 and 19 years old, 14% said they’ve downloaded movies and TV-shows through file-sharing sites, compared to 2% of women.

The percentage drops to 1% for both men and women of 45 years old and up.Those that are already downloading from unauthorized sources are not likely to stop from their activities, the survey shows. Of those admitting about their file-sharing habits, 29% said they would continue to download more e-books, and 28% said they would download more games and software in the next 12 months. As for music, 26% to 28% respondents admitted they will continue downloading.

As for those who want to remain on the legal side, of those already streaming ad-supported music, 27% said they would do more during the next year; 36% music enthusiasts who are already paying for a monthly streaming subscription said that they would continue to consume more music in the future.

Furthermore, of those who are currently downloading unauthorized TV shows and movies, 26% said they would download more from file-sharing sites the following year, dropping to 24% for those who prefer cyberlockers, while those who are already paying for their movies either from PPV or on-demand services, 34% said they would consume more over the next twelve months.

When it comes to a change of habits during the following year, 15% to 19% of current downloaders said they would do less, a figure close (18%) to those who are abandoning DVDs. 30% of current movie goers expect to increase their habit in the year to come.

The survey shows that on the issue of regulating internet content 40% “strongly” or “slightly” disagreed with the notion that the internet should be regulated the same way as TV, while a total of 58% said that it should.

Finally, when it comes to policing the internet, 53% agreed that stronger regulation is required, while only 18% disagreed.

The full report can be seen here.

Copyright Platform Offered By European Pirate Party

In an attempt to offer a better alternative to ACTA, Pirate Party MEP Christian Engstrom and founder Rick Falkvinge have released The Case For Copyright Reform – a 107-page e-Book expressing the party’s vision for reconciling copyright protection with digital sharing.

Founded in Sweden in 2006, the International Pirate Party have decided to take the bull by the horns, and came up with the clearest, most detailed statement on how the party plans to act on piracy issues.

While the proposal highlights that file-sharing’s growth cannot be stopped without monitoring private communication, thus “infringing on fundamental human rights”, the authors clarify that they don’t want to abolish copyright. Albeit digital rights management systems would be banned under the Pirate Party plan, copyright would continue to prevent people from legally making a profit from the works of others. Non-commercial copying and use would be made completely legal; and to make things clear on the meaning of copyright Ekstrom and Falvinge agree that people could once copy a poem or dub a cassette and send it to a friend without punishment.

In addition, to make the boundaries for sharing crystal clear, the authors suggest setting explicit guidelines for legal audio and visual sampling, similar to the kinds of established legal quotation rights for text. Copyright protection would be cut from 70 years to 20 years from the time of publication. Furthermore, these copyrights would need to be renewed five years after publication “to allow orphaned works quick entry back into the public domain.”

The book also details on how current copyright laws meddle with technological and creative progress, as well as the freedom of private communication and due process. It further offers evidence from Norway and Sweden to show that artists can still make a living in a world where their works can be copied freely, by shifting to other revenue sources.

Perhaps this detailed book will help change the minds of some German intellectuals who, reportedly, have recently turned against the party.

The Industry, The Govt and The Copyright Trolls

We come with yet another report from the EFF about how Hollywood studios created a new kind of “monster” – copyright trolls who force settlements from internet subscribers by making use of intimidation, aided by US’s faulty copyright laws.

Last Friday, EFF Senior Staff Technologist Seth Schoen took the witness stand in AF Holdings v. Does where he tried to explain to a federal judge why BitTorrent users should not be deprived by their constitutional rights when scoped by trolls. Taking into consideration the brutality on which copyright treaties are built, EFF asks a fair question:

“How will Hollywood help protect US citizens from copyright trolls?”

Meanwhile these trolls are suing groups of people from 20 to 5.000 alleged pirates in a single lawsuit with only a list of IP addresses. After obtaining the court’s permission, they send subpoenas to ISPs with the hope to obtain their users’ names and addresses. The next step is to send threatening letters, asking for settlements “or else”. Until now, over 200.000 U.S. residents have been involved in such lawsuits, many of which preferred to settle just to end the harassment. Although groups like the RIAA ended the lawsuit campaign back in 2008 after realizing the damage done to the industry’s image, this has meant nothing for copyright trolls.

Since 2008 they’ve continued to sue six times more people than the music groups ever did, applying aggressive methods of intimidation, and eventually cashing in millions from these settlements. At the core of the problem are U.S. copyright laws and legal precedents pushed through Congress and the courts by the entertainment industries and their lobbyists. Let’s take for example the statutory penalty for sharing only one copyrighted work (one track) that can reach up to 0.000. Therefore, it’s no wonder that people prefer to settle for several thousand dollars – even if they broke no law. According to the entertainment industries, it is imperative for these penalties to be as high as possible, thinking that this will discourage illegal downloading, but ignoring the fact that they are creating an abusive system that’s controlled exactly by these trolls.

EFF’s article continues on writing about the legal doctrine of “secondary liability”. Both the movie and recording industries are continuously pressing for broader liability for intermediaries, internet sites and services, and developers of tools and software. It is yet another loophole on which copyright trolls profit. They disregard actual copyright infringers and focus on the owners of internet accounts. As such, even if someone understands secondary liability and can afford a lawyer, he or she still prefers to settle and not risk a long expensive trial, regardless of the fact that one could win.

Furthermore, plaintiffs in such suits usually mix together internet users from around the country and obtain their identities from ISPs based on a court order.

“Doing this requires trampling on jurisdiction rules that keep people from being unfairly forced to defend themselves far from home, joinder rules that guarantee every defendant is treated as an individual, and the First Amendment, which gives us a right to communicate anonymously,” explains EFF’s article.

Last but not least, the entertainment industries have spent millions of lobbying and advertising dollars during the decades to promote the buggy idea that if copyright law promotes creativity, then even more aggressive copyright legislations will promote harder.

“According to this philosophy, the importance of preventing even the most inconsequential copyright infringement justifies chilling free speech, unmasking anonymous Internet users, wholesale regulation of the Internet … and setting loose the trolls,” Mitch Stoltz explains.

This view was on full display last week at a hearing in the D.C. federal district court, when ISPs – aided by the EFF – tried to destroy subpoenas for internet users’ identities.

One thing is clear, however – there will always be people who are willing to use the legal system as part of a shakedown, but copyright trolls, if not stopped by Hollywood, will always lurk around, sniffing money out of the pockets of innocent people.

Female surf movies: surfer girls teaching how to ride a wave in cinema

All girl surf films. Female surf movie experiences. Women have been riding waves for decades and they've developed their own unique style in surfing. Sense and sensibility are main features in the female surfing movies. Rather than a special technique, these films transmit that eextrasensory perception commonly known as sixth sense.

The colours, the shots, the angles, the surf lines drawn on the wave face, the smile and stories behind each film are somehow different from the testosteronic attitude of the male surfing cinema. This doesn't mean girl movies are slow and boring. It's quite the opposite.

The best female surf movies have evolved through time and are getting new unexplored approaches. SurferToday.com has selected 22 surf films, in which surfer girls and women are filmmakers and/or stars of the plot.
