DEA’s ‘Three Strikes’ Warning Letters Due in 2013

Recently, independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries Ofcom announced that starting with summer 2013internet users suspected of illegal file-sharing will begin receiving warning letters.

The move is considered the first-step in the ‘three-strikes’ system imposed by the last year adopted Digital Economy Act (DEA). The third step could mean for the repeat infringers suspension of their internet connection.

Ofcom is in charge with establishing an ‘obligations code’ to go along with the new anti-piracy system; apparently, the letters will notify internet users that their connection has been used in copyright infringing activities and will tell them how to protect their net connection if they think someone else has hijacked it and use it to share files illegally.

DEA will also force ISPs to monitor internet users suspected of illegal file-sharing and prove they can match their personal data to the IP address being used in the offensive online activity.
